STEP-BY-STEP VIDEO TUTORIALS
VIDEO TEXT
Transcript for the video: Fleece Hat - Basic Version
In this video, you’re making a simple, versatile hat that can be customized in different ways. You can add little ears, a top “bobble,” or a decorative band, or keep it plain for a more classic look. The pattern is designed to be quick and beginner-friendly.
Fabric Choices
Fleece is commonly used because it’s soft and slightly stretchy, though not overly elastic. Using two different fleece colors works well for contrast and style.
For extra comfort, especially for children, you can line the hat with cotton or jersey. This helps reduce sweating and makes the hat more breathable.
Preparing the Pattern
The pattern comes in multiple pieces that need to be joined together along the marked attachment lines. Tape them together carefully so the shape is complete.
There are two main pattern sections: the outer hat and the lining. Both are cut on the fold, but the lining piece is slightly smaller so it sits neatly inside the outer layer when finished.
Sewing the Hat Panels
Start with the outer hat pieces. Sew the curved top seam first, forming the crown shape. It doesn’t need to be perfect—just a smooth curve.
Press the seam open after sewing to reduce bulk and improve shape.
Repeat the same process for the lining pieces, making sure the right side is facing correctly as you sew.
Joining Outer Fabric and Lining
Place the outer hat and lining right sides together, matching seams carefully. Pin around the full edge, leaving a small turning gap (about 5 cm).
Add extra pins along seams if needed to keep them from shifting while sewing.
Sew around the full edge of the hat, reinforcing the stitching at the start and end.
Turning the Hat
Turn the hat right side out through the opening. Push out the seams gently so the shape becomes smooth and rounded.
At this stage, the lining sits neatly inside the outer fabric.
Adding the Top Bobble
If your design includes a bobble, attach it by stitching through the top of the hat several times with strong thread. Secure it firmly so it won’t loosen with use.
Finishing the Opening
Close the turning gap either by machine stitching straight across or by hand sewing for a hidden finish. Machine stitching is faster and commonly used for a clean, practical result.
Final Result
The finished hat is soft, comfortable, and customizable. Depending on your design choices, it can be playful with ears and a bobble or simple and classic.
It’s also a great beginner-friendly sewing project and works especially well for kids or gift-making.
Transcript for the video: Fleece Hat With Headband
In this video, the focus is on how to modify the basic hat pattern to create different styles, including versions with ear flaps, decorative bands, and small animal ears. The goal is to show how flexible the base pattern is so you can adapt it freely.
Adjusting the Hat Shape
You can reshape the outer hat pattern by redrawing the edges. For example, you can lower the sides to cover the ears more or curve the shape differently for a softer fit.
If you remove or reshape any part of the pattern, always add back a seam allowance (about 1 cm) on both sides to ensure the final size stays correct after sewing.
Adding Bands and Sections
If you want a separate lower band (for contrast colors or style changes), you can draw this directly onto the pattern and cut it as an additional strip.
Once cut, remember to include seam allowance so the band fits cleanly when reattached.
Creating and Adding Ears
Ears can be drawn directly onto the pattern in any shape you like. Once designed, add a 1 cm seam allowance all the way around.
Cut the ear pieces twice for the outer fabric and twice for the lining so they can be sewn and turned properly.
Cutting and Preparing Pieces
After finalizing your modified pattern:
- Cut outer hat pieces
- Cut lining pieces
- Cut ear pieces (outer + inner layers)
- Cut any additional band or decorative strips
Fleece or similar fabric works well because it holds shape but still has softness.
Sewing the Ears
Place ear pieces right sides together and sew around the edges. Leave the base open if needed for turning.
Trim seam allowances slightly to reduce bulk, especially around curves, so the ears turn smoothly.
Turn ears right side out and press flat.
Constructing the Hat Body
Sew the outer hat panels together first, shaping the crown with smooth curved seams. Try to maintain an even curve for a better fit.
Repeat the same steps for the lining pieces.
Press seams open after sewing to reduce bulk and improve shape.
Inserting the Ears
Place the finished ears between the outer hat and lining at the top seam where you want them positioned.
Make sure they are tucked inside and secured so they will stand upright once turned.
Pin carefully so they don’t shift during stitching.
Joining Outer Hat and Lining
Place the outer hat and lining right sides together and sew around the entire edge, leaving a small turning gap.
Take care when sewing over the ears so they stay securely in place.
Turning and Shaping
Turn the hat right side out through the opening. Push out all seams and shape the ears properly.
Tie any small internal securing threads or trim excess if needed.
Closing and Finishing
Close the turning gap either by machine stitching or hand sewing.
Press the hat lightly to set the shape.
Final Result
The finished hat is fully customizable, with options for ear shapes, bands, and different silhouettes. The same base pattern can be adapted into playful animal-style hats or simple winter hats depending on your design choices.
I like a lot beautiful pattern thank you
I made one of these hats as a last minute Christmas present for 3 year old grandson. Once he put it on, he didn't want to take it off! A word of caution, however, check your printer that you are printing the pattern full size. The first hat a made was about the size for an 18 month old toddler.
I loved the pattern. I made 12, as gifts. Can't wait to send them off.
I probably won't make this until fall but I am looking forward to it it looks like a very nice pattern and easy to follow.
