Georgina Dress – Construction Overview

Transcript for the video: Georgina Pinafore All-In-One Tutorial

Preparing the Pattern and Fabric

For the Georgina dress, you will need a lightweight cotton such as cotton lawn. About 70 cm is enough for a 3-year-old size, along with matching thread, scissors, and fabric scraps for applique.

Print your pattern in borderless mode and always check the scale first. The test square should measure exactly 5 cm (or 1 inch). Once confirmed, assemble the pattern pieces according to the diagram, matching the letters and covering any dashed overlap lines with tape.

You will also notice optional markings on the pattern:

  • A box pleat line instead of gathers
  • A gather line that can extend up to the underarm
  • Separate front and back yokes
  • Slight size differences in the front to accommodate a child’s shape

Cut the front piece twice by folding fabric and flipping the pattern over so both sides are symmetrical.

Cutting the Fabric

Lay out your fabric according to the grain arrows. Make sure pattern pieces sit exactly on the fold where indicated—do not add seam allowance at fold edges.

Cut:

  • Front and back yokes (cut twice if needed)
  • Skirt pieces (front and back)
  • Optional lining or contrast fabric
  • Small applique pieces (bows or pockets if included)

Transfer all snips carefully, especially pleat and gathering points.

Appliqué Decoration

For decoration, use bondaweb (fusible web) on your applique shapes.

  1. Draw hearts (or desired shapes) on the paper side
  2. Cut them out in different sizes
  3. Place them on your fabric layout
  4. Peel backing paper off
  5. Position on the front bodice

Use organza over the top when pressing if your fabric is delicate or white to prevent marks.

Press in place for a few seconds without moving the iron.

Then stitch around each shape with a small stitch (around 2 mm), keeping an even distance from the edge. Slow, controlled stitching gives the cleanest result.

Sewing the Bodice

Close the side seams of the bodice only (not shoulders yet). Repeat for lining if used.

Then place lining and outer bodice right sides together:

  • Match side seams first
  • Align shoulder points
  • Pin carefully around armholes and neckline

Sew around the armholes and neckline with a 1 cm seam allowance.

Clip curves carefully so the seam turns smoothly when inverted.

Turn the bodice right side out and press well.

Shoulder Seams (Clean Construction Method)

Instead of sewing shoulders normally:

  • Insert one shoulder inside the other (right sides together)
  • Align edges carefully
  • Stitch across with 1 cm seam allowance

This creates a neat enclosed shoulder finish.

Press once complete.

Constructing the Skirt

Place skirt pieces right sides together and sew side seams.

You can:

  • Sew first, then overlock (for thicker fabrics)
  • Or overlock after sewing if preferred

Press seams open for a clean finish.

Hemming the Skirt

Finish raw edges with an overlocker.

Turn hem up about 3 cm and press all the way around.

Stitch close to the folded edge using a straight stitch.

Use a guide on your machine to keep stitching even.

Gathering the Skirt (if used)

If your version has gathers:

  • Sew two rows of long stitches
  • Pull threads to gather fabric evenly
  • Distribute gathers carefully between side seams

Pin evenly before sewing to the bodice.

Attaching Skirt to Bodice (Important Method)

This version uses a slightly unconventional method for beginners:

Instead of matching traditional right sides together, you may temporarily work “inside out” layers for easier control.

Key steps:

  • Align side seams first
  • Distribute gathers evenly using threads
  • Pin carefully all the way around
  • Ensure gathers are smooth and even before sewing

Sew with a 1 cm seam allowance, taking care not to catch extra layers.

Final Assembly

Once attached:

  • Remove visible gathering threads
  • Press seam allowance neatly
  • Topstitch if desired for a clean finish

Attach sleeves if included, then finish with final pressing.

Completion

The Georgina dress is now assembled with:

  • Appliqué front detail
  • Structured yoke
  • Clean gathered or pleated skirt
  • Professional enclosed seams

It is ready for final pressing and photographs.
