BUTTONHOLES & FRIENDS

Not just buttonholes, a whole lot more for you to discover. All techniques have a skill level, which makes it easy to find the method suitable for yourself.

SHIRT PLACKET

In this demonstration, I'll guide you through adding buttonholes to a front placket along with proper button placement techniques.

BLOUSE PLACKET

I'm back with our beloved Beatrice pattern today! On this slim placket, all buttonholes run vertically—even the top one (though I'd normally place it horizontally for better sit). I'll show you my quick trick for perfect button positioning that makes all the difference!

BACK OPENING

VERTICAL INSERTION

This tutorial demonstrates the process of creating and spacing buttonholes for the Isabella dress's back opening. This Isabella dress features a vertical button closure along the back.

BACK OPENING

HORIZONTAL INSERTION

This tutorial shows the difference in method, when the buttonholes are inserted horizontally. Small changes make a big difference especially when you are working with an obvious pattern.

BOUND BUTTONHOLE

There's something truly special about handcrafted buttonholes on a coat—they're not just functional elements, but little works of art that elevate your entire garment. Prepared properly, they will give you far fewer headaches than trying to wrangle with machine buttonholes!

DENIM DUNGAREES

DIFFICULT INSERTION!

Adding these buttonholes was a right old pain, as the seam allowances always got in the way. But at least in the end, I found a couple of ways around the disaster that can be a buttonhole in a heavy fabric! Hope it helps you.

JEANS BUTTONS &

BUCKLES & SLIDERS

These are great to make your denim projects really authentic. I found the most reasonably priced option on Amazon, so if you like them to use my link to get to the buttons.

FRONT PLACKET

KAMSNAPS & BUTTONS

Sometimes you can mix and match. Of course, I could have added buttonholes down the placket, but why make things harder? The KamSnaps worked well, and the waistband got the horizontal buttonhole treatment.

ROULEAUX LOOP

Fabric loops are an invaluable sewing technique. Perfect for elegant closures on flower girl and bridal dresses or refined neck fastenings.

Though elastic hairbands offer a quick fix, nothing compares to the polished finish of a fabric loop.

BOUND BUTTONHOLE

Ready for another bound buttonhole project? This time I'm tackling the Dakota coat. The technique follows essentially the same method as the Pea Coat version, but with a pleasant advantage - the lighter fabric makes this one a bit more manageable to work with.

HOW TO COVER A BUTTON

Button covering offers an excellent design option. These refined details appear on quality jackets, dresses, and decorative elements where their purpose is purely aesthetic enhancement.

KAMSNAPS

I rely on KamSnaps for secure, efficient closures. Whether on rompers, blouses, or bags, they install easily and provide lasting durability. If you've used my sewing patterns, you've certainly noticed their presence throughout my work.
