POCKETS

Dive head-first into pockets from super simple patch pockets to more advanced welt pockets.

SUNFLOWER POCKETS

These pockets have a half-moon shape and added ruffles and sunflower petals.

You can add this pocket pattern to an existing pattern or try my Mimi pattern.

Either way, the template for the sunflower pocket can be downloaded here.

SIDE POCKETS

Here's how to add side pockets to your pattern! This tutorial demonstrates pocket insertion using the Vivienne teen pattern. These pockets feature a recessed entry, giving them a clean and polished finish even though they weren't included in the original design.

CHEATS WELT POCKET

SINGLE & DOUBLE

This video demonstrates three different approaches to creating a welt pocket using my simplified technique. I call it the "cheat's method" because it's significantly easier than the traditional approach. While it does create slightly more bulk, I believe the simplicity makes this trade-off well worthwhile.

CHEATS WELT POCKET WITH FLAP

The focus here is on creating a clean armhole with no visible seam. The lining hangs loose into the armhole. This method is excellent for any fine jacket or coat you want to put together. Special Bonus here is the recessed ruffle hem.

WESTERN POCKET

This pocket style is among the most popular choices. In this demonstration, I've enhanced the pocket opening with binding, which not only provides additional stability but also creates an attractive decorative element.

TRADITIONAL WELT POCKET

The double welt pocket is a sophisticated tailoring detail that adds both functionality and elegance to garments. Characterized by two parallel fabric strips framing the pocket opening, this classic feature is commonly found on high-end blazers, suit jackets, and tailored pants.

WESTERN POCKET

APRON

In this demonstration, I've enhanced the pocket opening with bias binding that features a lace edge. The half apron primarily uses binding to finish all the edges, which is an excellent technique for achieving professional results quickly and efficiently.

PANEL POCKET

The panel pocket, also known as a single welt pocket, features a wider opening and is commonly used in outerwear. In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to create this professional detail specifically for a Pea Coat, where this style of pocket is particularly appropriate and functional.

PATCH POCKET

SHIRT

This patch pocket design is featured on a girl's shirt, but it's identical to what you'd use on boys' or men's shirts. For more masculine-looking pocket variations, please explore the shirt pocket alternatives in my other tutorials.

PATCH POCKET

PLACEMENT HACK

Here's the pocket positioning trick you've been looking for! This method ensures your pockets are perfectly symmetrical on both sides of the shirt front. I've relied on this simple technique for decades to achieve professional results every time.

PATCH POCKET

DUNGAREES

A patch pocket sits on the outside of a garment rather than being sewn into the interior. Patch pockets are created separately and then attached to the finished garment surface with visible stitching around the edges.

INSEAM POCKETS

Inseam pockets are convenient side pockets that are inserted directly into the side seams of garments. While I'm using the Betsy skirt as a reference example, this method works wonderfully for many different patterns.
